At any time since you turned age 13, were both your parents deceased, were you in foster care, or were you a dependent or ward of the court?

This is question 52 on the paper Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.

Check the box if at any time since you turned age 13, you

  • had no living parent (biological or adoptive), even if you’re now adopted;
  • were in foster care, even if you’re no longer in foster care as of today; or
  • were a dependent or ward of the court, even if you’re no longer a dependent or ward of the court as of today.

Note: For federal student aid purposes, someone who is incarcerated isn’t considered a ward of the court.

Note: The financial aid administrator at your college or career school might require you to provide proof that you were in foster care, or a dependent or ward of the court.

If you’re not sure if you were in foster care, check with your state child welfare agency. You can find the contact information for your state child welfare agency by visiting your state child welfare agency.
