How to Answer the “Parents Filed 2018 Income Tax Return?” Question When Parents Didn’t File a Joint Federal Tax Return

This is guidance to assist with question 79 on the paper Free Application for Federal Student (FAFSA®) form.

Use the table below to answer the question about whether your parents have completed their taxes when they have two different completion statuses. For example, your parents might have two different statuses if they’re married but file separate tax returns or if they report a marital status of “unmarried and both legal parents living together.”

If one parent… …and the other parent… Then answer the tax return filing status question with the following:
Already completed Already completed Already completed
Already completed Will file Already completed—You’ll need to return to the FAFSA form to update the tax return information for the parent who indicated “Will file” after that parent completes his or her tax return.
Already completed Not going to file Already completed
Will file Will file Will file—You’ll need to return to the FAFSA form to update the tax return information for both parents after your parents complete their tax return(s).
Will file Not going to file Will file—You’ll need to return to the FAFSA form to update the tax return information for the parent who indicated “Will file” after that parent completes his or her tax return.
Not going to file Not going to file Not going to file
