This is guidance to assist with question 80 on the paper Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form.

Use this table to determine the type of tax return filed if your parents filed two separate tax returns.

 

If one parent filed or will file an IRS form... …and the other parent filed or will file an IRS form… Answer that your parents filed or will file an IRS form:
1040 1040 1040
1040 Foreign Tax Return, 1040NR, or 1040NR-EZ 1040
1040 A tax return with Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory or Freely Associated State 1040
Foreign Tax Return, 1040NR, or 1040NR-EZ Foreign Tax Return, 1040NR, or 1040NR-EZ Foreign Tax Return, 1040NR, or 1040NR-EZ
